Product standards and industry representation
Paul Smith, the Rooflight Association’s Technical Committee Chair, oversees the working groups, according to Roofing Today. Their work involves British and European standards committees and other industry bodies. The association says this gives members representation in standards discussions and helps them keep track of legislative changes.
Jeremy Dunn leads the Product Standards group. Its committee involvement includes BSI B/542/8 and the European groups CEN/TC128/SC9/WG2 and WG3. The group’s remit is to help define standards for product performance, placing its work within the processes used to establish requirements for rooflight products.
Fire and thermal requirements
John Godley heads the Fire group, which works with BSI FSH/022/0-/08. Its subjects include the exposure of roofs to external fire and tests for the spread of flame on building products. The group also responds to legislative changes, including those relating to Building Regulations Approved Document B.
Stuart Middle oversees the Thermal group. Its role is to monitor legislative developments concerning the thermal performance of rooflights, including Building Regulations Approved Document L. The association identifies this as a separate area of work from the product standards and fire remits.
Roof safety, guidance and participation
Mark Wilcox leads the Safety group and represents the association on the Advisory Committee for Roofsafety (ACR). The group is responsible for communicating changes to non-fragile performance requirements. Its remit covers both roofs and rooflights.
The groups’ combined technical knowledge informs new guidance and revisions to existing publications issued by the association. These documents are available to download free from its website. Smith said the groups influence the requirements used in day-to-day work by manufacturers, contractors, fabricators and installers.
The association says it published the working groups page to make their activities more transparent and encourage member representatives to participate. Existing members who want to become involved can contact info@rooflightassociation.org.
