How the information was assessed

The review examined how Langley prepares product information, approves it for publication and maintains it when details change, according to Roofing Today. It also considered who takes responsibility for those changes. The assessment concerned information for Langley Reinforced Bitumen Membrane as a single roofing system.

Assessors sampled material across several ways in which the company communicates with customers. That included technical performance figures in datasheets, specification wording, website content and material supplied to clients by the sales team. The scope therefore extended beyond a single technical document.

The Code for Construction Product Information assessment also included a review of leadership and company culture. This examined how responsibility for product information and product safety is distributed across the business, rather than looking solely at the quality of individual documents.

Why the wording matters

Langley technical director Simon Blackham said architects, contractors and specifiers use the company's published material to make decisions. He warned that unclear claims or wording open to different interpretations leave scope for mistakes. He said the company needed to support its product claims with evidence so that users could rely on them.

Roofing Today described the purpose of the independent review as providing greater confidence in the accuracy, clarity and currency of information. Accessibility and the avoidance of ambiguity were also part of that purpose, alongside checking that management arrangements exist to maintain those qualities.

The report placed this work in the context of the Building Safety Act. It said specifiers are expected to provide evidence of the information behind their specifications and demonstrate competence in using it. That concerns the basis on which a specification is prepared, as well as the claims made by a manufacturer.

The system's background

Langley introduced an SBS-modified bituminous membrane system to the UK market in 1972. According to Roofing Today, it was the first system of its type introduced in the UK.

The publication reported the CCPI award on 21 September 2026, more than 50 years after that introduction. The assessment related to the information Langley publishes for the system today, rather than its original market launch.

Obligations attached to the mark

The mark has an individual identifying number and is valid for a limited period. Langley must notify CCPI if it makes significant changes to the way it manages information for the assessed system. The award therefore includes a continuing reporting obligation.

Users can also take concerns about that information directly to CCPI, rather than raising them only with Langley. Chief executive Tony Silvestri said independent scrutiny meant customers did not have to rely solely on the company's own assurances. He also pointed to the separate route for reporting errors.
