Guidance and training

The organisations have also produced an introductory guidance note, GN77, according to Roofing Today. It sets out bat-related considerations for roofing work. The publication is available to download, giving contractors a written resource alongside the training.

The shorter e-learning course draws on more detailed training provided by the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT). Delivered online, that training includes opportunities for roofing contractors to discuss different bat species, the places they use as roosts and their importance. It offers a discussion-based option as well as the material members can study independently.

Conservation and roofing work

BCT has worked to protect bats and their habitats across the UK for almost 35 years. Its work includes providing guidance to people whose activities could affect bats. The roofing collaboration brings that conservation work to a trade whose activities can affect roost sites.

Jo Ferguson, BCT’s built environment manager, said the partnership demonstrated the roofing industry’s commitment to bat protection. She also linked the work to helping both contractors and householders undertake roof work while complying with the law. Ferguson welcomed the knowledge and dedication of the NFRC team involved, Roofing Today reported.
